We are pleased to offer for your consideration a 1933 J. Chein & Co. Popeye Barrel Walker. This vintage toy is working excellent!  When wound Popeye and his barrel will move side to side erratically waddling in a circle while his head bobs about.  The toy is in very nice condition with the only paint loss on the back of the barrel at the key and scattered loss to the shoes.  The toy appears to be all original including his pipe.  We found this Popeye toy referenced on page 71 in the book J. Chein & Co. A Collectors Guide to an American Toymaker by Alan Jaffe.  The book states that this toy, the No. 258 Popeye barrel walker, was made from 1932 until the mid 1930’s.   The toy is marked with both the Chein shield logo and a 1932 King Features Syndicate Inc trademark.  Chein’s use of the Happy Days Barrel Bank and Popeye’s body was meant to be symbolic of the tough economic times of the depression.  Popeye measures 7” tall and 3” in diameter.  This antique tin wind up Popeye Barrel Walker toy will make an excellent addition to any tin wind up toy, Popeye, or comic character collection! PLEASE REVIEW ALL PHOTOS AND USE THE ENLARGE AND ZOOM FEATURES FOR THE BEST DESCRIPTION OF THIS TOY.
